Does this align with the new administration? Hmm. Let's see—money for states for more competitive manufacturing and top advisor Elon Musk by his side? YES.

Thoughts on Administration Priorities

The Department of Energy (DOE) is investing nearly $13 million in its State Manufacturing Leadership Program (SMLP), marking this initiative's third round of funding. With a total budget of $50 million, this program aims to help small and medium-sized manufacturers (SMMs) adopt innovative manufacturing technologies.

In previous rounds, the DOE funded 17 projects across 15 states. These projects are creating and expanding programs that assist thousands of SMMs in implementing advanced technologies and utilizing high-performance computing (HPC) resources.

This latest round of funding expands the program's reach to include all U.S. states, Washington, D.C., U.S. territories, and state-funded universities and colleges.

Recognizing these educational institutions' vital role in workforce development, the DOE aims to support programs that equip students and workers with the skills needed to thrive in modern manufacturing.

These programs may include:

  • Degree and certification programs focused on smart manufacturing

  • Direct technical assistance to SMMs

  • Apprenticeships and other hands-on training opportunities

The DOE encourages eligible entities to apply for funding to support initiatives such as:

  • Providing technical assistance and training on smart manufacturing

  • Conducting facility assessments to identify areas for improvement

  • Offering financial aid to SMMs for implementing smart manufacturing upgrades

Selected applicants can receive up to $2 million over three years.

A required cost share of at least 23.1% of the total project cost is required as DOE prioritizes programs that demonstrate long-term sustainability.

A key benefit of the SMLP is its access to valuable resources and expertise. Awardees can receive technical assistance from CESMII, the Smart Manufacturing Institute, and connect with a network of public and private organizations, including:

  • Manufacturing USA institutes

  • National Laboratories

  • NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnerships

  • Industrial Training & Assessment Centers

  • Institutions of higher education

This collaborative approach ensures that SMMs receive comprehensive support in their journey towards smart manufacturing adoption.

The Department of Energy (DOE) has announced its intention to reissue a funding opportunity to strengthen the domestic battery supply chain. This announcement, DE-FOA-0003546, serves as a heads-up and doesn't yet include details about the application process.

The funding opportunity, officially titled "Bipartisan Infrastructure Law 40207(b) Battery Materials Processing and 40207(c) Battery Manufacturing Grants Round II," will provide grants to support projects related to processing battery materials and manufacturing batteries. This initiative is part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), which aims to invest in critical infrastructure and bolster American manufacturing.

Keep in mind that the latter is a preliminary notice. The DOE may adjust the specifics of the funding opportunity before its official release. Stay tuned for updates and further information on how to apply for these grants. You're welcome for the heads up! 😉
